Vehicle & Transport Insurance Guide
By Tahir Abbas, Editor · Last updated 1 November 2026
Vehicle and transport insurance covers the machines that move people and goods: cars, vans, taxis, motorcycles, motorhomes, fleets, bicycles and boats. The right policy protects you against the cost of an accident, theft or damage — and, just as importantly, against claims from other people if your vehicle causes injury or damage to their property.
This hub gathers every vehicle and transport guide on Being Insurance. Each one explains what the cover does, what it usually leaves out, who it suits, and how to compare policies before you buy.
Types of vehicle and transport insurance
- Car Insurance
- Van Insurance
- Taxi Insurance
- Motorcycle Insurance
- Motorhome Insurance
- Fleet Insurance
- Bicycle Insurance
- Boat & Marine Insurance
What vehicle and transport insurance typically covers
- Liability for injury to other people and damage to their property
- Damage to your own vehicle from an accident, fire or theft, depending on the level of cover
- Vandalism, storm damage and other accidental damage on comprehensive policies
- Medical costs and legal costs connected with an accident, where the policy includes them
- Extras such as breakdown assistance, courtesy vehicles or cover for personal belongings, where chosen
What vehicle and transport insurance typically does not cover
- Wear and tear, mechanical breakdown and routine maintenance
- Driving without a valid licence, or outside the terms of the policy
- Use of the vehicle that the policy does not allow, such as undeclared business use
- Damage caused deliberately, or while under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Items and accessories not declared or not covered by the policy
Who vehicle and transport insurance is for
Anyone who owns or operates a vehicle needs cover — in most places, at least liability cover is a legal requirement before a vehicle can be used on public roads. Beyond the legal minimum, the right level of cover depends on the value of the vehicle, how much you rely on it, and whether you could afford to repair or replace it yourself.
How to choose and compare vehicle and transport insurance
- Start with the level of cover: liability-only, third-party fire and theft, or comprehensive
- Compare the same excess, limits and extras across quotes, not just the headline price
- Check who is covered to drive, and whether business or commercial use is included
- Read the exclusions, especially around undeclared modifications and vehicle use
- Consider the claims process and repair network, not only the premium
